As we begin another school year, Matt and I find ourselves looking for employment. For those of you who have weathered this storm before, my heart aches with yours. Alas, God is good and we have some severance from his last job so we are blessed and feel provided for during this time of pulling the reins back on the family budget.
Matt and I have ALWAYS had date night, even in the early years of marriage when we didn't even have two pennies to rub together, we found ways to budget in date night. I wanted to get back to our roots and find some ways to do a meaningful date night challenge this month where you don't have to spend any money at all! Check out these catholic date night ideas below...

10 Free Catholic Date Night Ideas for Catholic Couples
Faith + Romance
Adoration & Dessert at Home: Go to Eucharistic Adoration together, then come home for a simple homemade dessert (even popcorn & hot cocoa feels special). Consider trying my famous chocolate chip cookie recipe! End the night with a short blessing over each other.
Pray a Rosary Walk: Take a slow evening walk, praying a rosary or chaplet together. Be sure to stop before each mystery and share your intentions with one another. End with taking a flower to a local Mary statue like the one in your yard and asking Mary to watch over your marriage.
Lectio Divina Night: Pick a short Gospel passage, light candles, and pray through it together (read, meditate, share what speaks to you). Follow it with wine/tea and quiet conversation.
Consider the following passages:
John 15:9–12 — “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Remain in my love… Love one another as I have loved you.” Perfect for reflecting on how Christ’s love sets the standard for marital love: sacrificial, steadfast, and joy-filled.
Matthew 19:3–6 — “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Rooted in the sacrament of marriage, this helps you meditate on unity, fidelity, and God’s hand in your vocation.
John 2:1–11 — The Wedding Feast at Cana Jesus’ first miracle, turning water into wine at a wedding. Invites reflection on inviting Christ and Mary into your marriage, and trusting Him to bring abundance and joy where there seems to be lack.
Luke 24:13–35 — The Road to Emmaus, The disciples’ hearts burn within them as Christ walks with them. Reflect on how Jesus accompanies you on your journey, often in hidden ways, and how you recognize Him in “the breaking of the bread” (a Eucharistic connection).
Matthew 5:1–12 — The Beatitudes “Blessed are the poor in spirit… Blessed are the peacemakers…” A roadmap for holiness in daily married life—ask how one another can live the Beatitudes together in family, work, and love.
Connection + Fun
"Memory Lane" Night: Look through old photos, wedding albums, or love letters. Share favorite stories about when you first met, or something you’ve never told each other about that time.
Board/Card Game Rivalry: Play games you already have (or borrow from friends). Add a fun twist—loser gives the winner a massage, does the dishes, etc.
Stargazing Picnic: Grab a blanket, go to your backyard or a quiet park, and watch the stars. Bring a thermos of coffee/tea. Bonus: read Psalm 8 together (“When I look at your heavens…”).
Service + Shared Purpose
Plan a Family Mission: Spend the evening dreaming about how you want to live your Catholic faith as a family. Maybe brainstorm family traditions, a family prayer, or a service project.
Cook a “Poor Man’s Supper” Together: Pick a simple meal (beans, bread, soup) in solidarity with the poor. Pray for families in need, and then share together what you’re grateful for.
Creativity + Adventure
At-Home Dance Night: Make a playlist (could be romantic, swing, or even your wedding songs). Clear the living room and dance.
Library or Chapel Date: Visit a local church or chapel you’ve never been to and spend time praying there. Or head to the library, pick a book of poetry, saints’ writings, or travel photography, and read aloud to each other.
For those of you on a tight budget like we are, solidarity! But let's set aside time for one another! Let us know in comments below which date night idea you want to try!
